An assisted living residence is defined by the Assisted Living Federation of America as a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health care designed to meet the needs of those who need help with daily living activities.
Q. Who lives in assisted living facilities?
A.
The typical resident is an older adult who can no longer manage at home but does not require the complex, 24-hour care of traditional long-term care facilities such as a nursing home.
Q. Is assisted living covered by Medicare?
A.
Medicare does not cover assisted living specifically but will continue to pay for the same services as those received while at home, such as doctor's visits, qualifying hospital stays, durable medical equipment, Part D medications, skilled nursing visits and therapies.
Q. Will long-term care insurance pay for care?
A.
Long-term care insurance is specifically designed to cover the costs of long-term care services. Depending on the policy, long-term care insurance may pay for care in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and/or at home. Check with your carrier to determine coverage for care in assisted living facilities.
